Dark International Tournament - November 2008
Intro
As I announced few days ago, the Dark International Tournament is back! This is the 15th edition, even though it's passed more than one year from last cup. Since there are new players, and since some things changed, let's have a little introduction.
"Dark" means that you won't know other players results (and they won't know yours) until the end of the competition.
All DIT tracks and laptimes will also populate the TurboSliders.com ranking, after the competition has finished.
Info
All you have to do is driving your best lap in a given track with each default car (EasySlider, Slider, Spinner, AntiSlider, Speeder).
There are two ways to take part to the tournament:
- drive in the DIT Official Server (it will be available now and then, not 24h/day)
- send your recordings
Recordings
A race is being recorded if there's a "REC" red message in the top right corner of the screen. It's possible to enable/disable recordings pushing the record button (F4 by default, configure it at 'Settings > Keys'). It's also possible to save recordings automaticall in 'Settings > Recordings' (you can save automatically last 'n' races or save all of them).
Only recordings generated with TurboSliders 2.0.0 will be accepted (minimum beta rc4). Please download the latest TurboSliders version (2.0.0 Official Release) if you are running a beta version, so that there won't be problems at all.
Sending a recording
You can upload your recordings from this page (you need to be logged in to access it). You can upload as many recordings as you want (only fastest lap with each car will be saved). All recordings sent after the deadline will still be saved (but they won't figure in the competition). Your laptimes won't be visible to anybody before the deadline.
Please don't delete your recordings from your hard disk after submitting them. Our software for video uploading is still in beta test, so there might be problems.
If that page doesn't work and the error is about "associated player profile", you need to associate your player profile to your TurboSliders.com account. You can do it through this page.
WARNING:It's recommended to use only one nickname, in order to be correctly ranked. Turbo Sliders offers the possibility to set up multiple player profiles. But using always the same one is quite tricky. Using the same nick name doesn't mean it's exactly the same player. To use always the same player (name & ID), back up your 'players.da2' (inside the TurboSliders '/data/' folder). That file contains all profiles. If you use multiple computers, copy that file to other PC's too.

Surely it's a bit unfair that some people know the current track records whilst others do not? It's all very well not knowing what times people have set for this tournament; but at least make it a level playing field with everyone knowing the current records.Tijny wrote:That's the idea behind a dark tournament, not knowing what times other people will drive.
I liked better the Kobradog's Challenges (original dark tournament) where some of the drivers posted their times to the forum. Seeing some good times from others, and you where behind, you got more motivation to try harder.
Of course the DIT rules don't prohibit to post your times to the forum...

It's quite new track so I don't think that anyone has much information available. And if you ask to me, knowing some lap times done in few races is just worth nothing. It's enough to drive as fast as possible.iBlaze² wrote:Surely it's a bit unfair that some people know the current track records whilst others do not? That's exactly what I meant.Janne wrote:It's quite new track so I don't think that anyone has much information available. Hengari has a good point though (aah, the good old K Challenges
I actually thought about making a semi-dark tournament, but it wouldn't work: people can send their videos at the very last minutes (or sending slower laps before), so it remains totally dark (I would do so, for example).
There have been some tries in the past about using two deadlines, and it was quite interesting. But for now it's just better using the default system and see how many players will join.
Anyway, I don't remember how that Kobradog's cup worked. If it's about posting times, there are no rules about posting laptimes and discussing. But if some players don't want to share their laptimes, there wouldn't be way to know them, even if this was Kobradog's Super Challenge.
If you have suggestions for a "better system" (I actually couldn't find any in your posts), we'll use them in next editions.

Something I forgot in the first post:
- there is no need to edit your fastest lap out from the recording (it will be edited automatically)
- you can upload recordings as soon as you drive your laps, and then upload new ones if you improve your laptimes (this is recommended for those who normally forget to send recordings before the deadline)

Well, I'll have to send my videos near the end anyway, or you'll wank 100000 laps to beat them.dede wrote:- you can upload recordings as soon as you drive your laps, and then upload new ones if you improve your laptimes (this is recommended for those who normally forget to send recordings before the deadline)
Yep at the moment laptimes are visible for validation. I have to find a solution to fix this. I thought about not validating laps before the deadline, but this might work for first edition only. Another solution would be to accept videos automatically and check them after the DIT has ended.Tijny wrote:Well, I'll have to send my videos near the end anyway, or you'll wank 100000 laps to beat them.
Would it be of any use displaying own laptimes in the results page before the deadline?
I will make some changes today
Something came to my mind when editing the current system. I want to make it possible to check for own uploaded laptimes, as I said before. It might be possible also to display the current position: this way players will have a hint about laptimes.
Let me know your feedback about this. If you like it, I can implement it.

One solutiion could be different deadlines to each car. So you'll know if you have to beat someone with the next car to get ahead of him. Of course there are some setbacks in this. For example some people might like to drive cars in some specified order, you still wouldn't have any idea if your time with the car you are currently driving is fast or slow (on the other hand, that would serve the original dit idea) and so on.
We tried in the past using more deadlines (two different deadlines), but it didn't work nicely, since some players forgot to send their videos for the first deadline, so they got excluded from the final ranking.olio wrote:One solutiion could be different deadlines to each car.
I made some changes to the administration, so now laptimes aren't visible at validation (and videos aren't downloadable).
I also implemented my new idea, so at the results page you can see your current position (all other players are hidden). This will give some more motivation to improve (as Hengari suggested).
Competition ends this sunday (30 November) at midnight (CET). Remember to send your recordings in time
Partial Results (you need to have your player profile associated to your account, to be able to see your position; if you played with multiple nicks, I'll be able to merge them only AFTER the deadline).

Final Results are available here. Tijny won!
Track has been added to the Official Ranking. Next DIT track will be probably released this week (Sunday IHLC?).

Are you sure? Try sending it again or send it via e-mail.Janne wrote:Hmm. I sent yesterday my antislider lap which is 27.935 but it is not there.
Correct. Competition times will remain the same but you can improve your ranking times.Scud wrote:I can still improve my times/ranking? This works like "Old ranking system"? But cant improve my competition result, obviously.
And again, it didn't work. Please send via e-mail and I will try to figure it out.Janne wrote:I sent it again. Is it validable if only best lap is cut off from the rest? Whole lap is still visible of course.
P.S. Did you drive it with 2.0.0 (current release)?
If anybody else had this problem, please send videos via e-mail within 24 hours.
