My ideas/wishlist

Post by Finster » Fri Feb 25, 2005 9:52 pm

I'm sure ome of these ideas you have already thought of or were suggested, but here are some of the ones that I would like to see (in no paticular order). Please feel free to comment good or bad.

1. A pause key for a local race or during training. Sometimes you just gotta answer natures' call or the front door.

2. Something like /ignore <playername> If no admins are around and some jerk can't be kicked off at least you wouldn't have to listen to his crap while chatting.

3. Something like /watch <playername> My idea with this is that you would only be an observer (like connecting in the middle of a race). The "camera" would follow the selected person and it would be nice to be able to switch who you are observing during a race. I think this might help beginning drivers learn from watching good/fast drivers.

4. Password on a server. So if you want only a few friends to play on your personal server you can set a password. I know you can just trade IP addresses instead but I thought it might be an easy feature to implement.

5. Chat or messages on the master server would be nice. Sometimes you want to hook up with certain friends and you can loose them switching between servers. So if you could leave a message or say "meet me on the UK demo server 1" it would be nice.

6. Better Linux support. Like save stats in ~/.turbosliders

7. A splash screen for winning a race/cup as an option. Every race that i've watched on TV the winner has some beverage poured on him/her and usually some hot models jumping up and down. A quick animation of this would be fun IMHO. But make sure the cartoon girls are HOT! :D

8. If possible have the game switch to a window on error if you are playing fullscreen. That way i could kill the game if it locks up instead of restarting X-windows.

9. A total no contact option where BOTH players are disabled or are made to pause for a certain amount of time. I think certain drivers relish in disabling new guys. Anyway I think this would make an interesting twist.

10. Preset message keys (this is the one I would like the most) For example say keys 0 through 9. You could set them to any messages you'd like before racing. So while racing you could hit a key and it would "say" said message. Like:
Eat my dust sucker!
I'm gaining on you. No pressure!!!
Damn trees/bushes/rocks/tires!
WATCH OUT!
Sorry about that...
Nice pass dude.
How's the view from back there?!
etc.

11. Animated tiles. Like a little flagman guy with a checkered flag. Animated crowd in a grandstand. A track split by a train track with safety gates would be fun. Where you have to beat the train before the gate comes down. Or similar with a draw bridge that raised up to let a ship pass. The draw bridge would become a jump and then a barrier for a certain amount of time.

Whew, well thats it for now. Let me know what ya think.

Thanks,
Finster

Many good ideas, thanks. I will consider them all but here are comments to some:

Version 1.0.3 will have this feature. You can change the car you are observing by using acceleration and brake key. There is not much other new in that version but it should be available really soon.
4. Password on a server. So if you want only a few friends to play on your personal server you can set a password. I know you can just trade IP addresses instead but I thought it might be an easy feature to implement.
It is not *that* easy and so far I have thought that it is as hard to trade the IP as it would be to trade the password. So maybe not quite yet, maybe some time in the future :).
8. If possible have the game switch to a window on error if you are playing fullscreen. That way i could kill the game if it locks up instead of restarting X-windows.
That is a good idea but what kind of errors are causing those lockups? The best solution would of course be to have no such bad errors :). There were two Linux-dependent known issues that could cause crashes in version 1.0.2 that will be fixed in the soon-to-be-released 1.0.3.2: SDL_net caused SIGPIPE and OpenAL crashing if loading certain invalid(?) WAVs.
9. A total no contact option where BOTH players are disabled or are made to pause for a certain amount of time. I think certain drivers relish in disabling new guys. Anyway I think this would make an interesting twist.
On the other hand, there is the ghost mode already :). But that could of course be interesting, albeit avoiding collisions is quite hard with certain cars.
That would be very cool, yes. Unfortunately, that would be quite a big change because of the current track file format but maybe some time in the future if the format is redesigned...

First of all sorry for not putting this with the features request thread. I was reading that thread and then intended for this to go there when I clicked on new. I read a different forum that works like that. Also I was in the process of trying to move this by cutting and pasting but I couldn't delete it cause you replied so fast! Any admin please feel free to move these messages.

As far as my linux errors see the linux error thread. I'm fairly sure its with the AL and sound.

What do you think of the preset message keys for sending messages during a race idea?
This way you wouldn't have to stop racing to type something. Its what i want the most.
Just like to hear everyone's thoughts on it and any of the other ideas.

Actually, I have been thinking that feature myself, too. So far there have always been so many other things to do that I haven't had time for that but maybe in the future. Sometimes it is fun to try to write messages when driving (just press t, quickly type message and press enter) but I know that it often ends up badly :).

But here is the new Linux version that hopefully fixes the sound crash:

One big disadvantage of such a feature: it could be very annoying when the upper-left corner of the screen is flooded with those comments. :P Drivers might get distracted, causing them to make mistakes.
My opinion: it would be a nice feature for Punaball games, (coaching your teammate etc.) but for racing it would be nothing but annoying. :)

Nature/coffee maker/whatever calls me all the time & I just leave the game running. What's the problem with that?
Finster wrote:2. Something like /ignore <playername>
I second that one.
Finster wrote:10. Preset message keys
Type "Oops, sorry. I suck so hard." while waiting for the race to start and use that during the race. :P

But seriously, I don't see what good that feature would do. If that's going to be done, I hope "/ignore all" will be possible, too. There's enough time to communicate and stuff between races.

So "u ass" & "ffs" aren't enough for coaching? :) Just keep it simple for us st00pid folks, T.

Just thought that a pause key would be easy to implement. Only reasoning for it was if you had a good lap going and didn't want to blow the time to answer the door/phone etc.

I agree that if it was implemented that it would also be nice to switch it off. And to anwser Tijny's post: Any feature can be abused and I can see that this one might cause more trouble than its worth. Mainly, I thought it would be fun to pysch out a driver either infront or behind you. Also, I feel bad (and try to avoid) disabling new drivers who are really trying. Just would like to send them a quick "Sorry 'bout that" without having to slow down. I'm too damn slow already...

Just one more idea to consider...Take it or leave it.

10. Preset message keys
If preset keys will be done, which is good idea, then the players should be muted after third same sentence. I can just imagine, how easy it will be to flood otherwise. And we dont want that And we dont want that And we dont want that Punatiainen muted for 50 seconds ;)

<all quotes>
- Just a general thought on the supposed improvements mentioned here -
I have to agree with Tijny on this one..dont get overzealous with improvements, they will tend to disrupt the original feeling about the game and will take attention away from the corefeature which is setting good laptimes, beating ur buddies (or-mostly-annoyed-bys) by incredible racing, amazing overtaking and ofcourse that huge lag which made all ur opponants crash into a trackhash malformity generally known as a tree accept u.

so far we have seen the pro feature which gave TEKKENALM an early retirement but made newbies park their cars in middle of the freaking road.
We have seen a different trackhandling which made my car completely stop whenever a scrape of carpaint thought it hit a tree.
And where did all the players go i saw back in 19.86?

Ande mentioned some improvements on the game of punaball i would like to throw in here..scoreboard with the name of the guy who scored, selfdribbling ball which will get itself to the centre after a goal and i liked the idea of a race rerunfearture which alowes u (for punaball) to prove that tijny's goals are for 90% based on sheer luck and.....no thats rubbish
All great features which wont harm the game itself (and pls dont suggest playing with a slider anymore..its become quite corny and will be muttered on!)

well thats it for this post. Dont forget to check out www.punaball.com and the new 2vs2 competition.

warm greatings,

Well.... me wish that the game you can race with the computer...

It's like you have to always connect the server if you want to race
Mutiplayer (not talking about players on the keyboard)

So is it ok? :D

That feature may come in the future but can't promise anything yet :).

Ok, this is what I would LIKE to happen:
1. The color brown (base color, faded, strip). I hope its not there and I am just blind...
2. To make the video always record the race, then after have this option: Save video, Save just fastest lap, don't save video

Thx

I have good news for you, you can make your own colors by editing the RGB-values in players.dat. :)
For example, "120 70 0" would be brown.

Hmm, then you must have done something wrong. What exactly did you do, and did you have TS running?
(When I tried this while TS was running, it didn't work)

test
358f348e 0 120 70 0 1 0 200 250 0 200 250 250 <---brown middle, black edges
