Fun Server: Track Size

Post by Mike Nike » Thu Nov 24, 2005 12:34 am

After the discussion (http://jollygoodgames.com/forum/viewtop ... ec811cde82), i had to start this poll ;)

Note: the result of this vote might not be significant enough, perhaps.

In relation to the average of all drivers, i might have relative much fun (higher than the average).
But (at least at the moment): small tracks make more fun to me, absolute seen.

So my vote goes clear to "only small" tracks.

10 races or 20 races or something else?
20 races with too many laps would maybe mean: the cup takes too long and people do leave earlier or just join during the cup.
10 races with too less laps would maybe mean: the cup is short and some people might just stay only for 1 cup - but at least people are not leaving so early and they do not join so often during the cup.

Less laps or many laps?
Less laps: more chances for not so fast drivers and people do not have to wait long, if they join the cup. But in nonghostracing, less laps at small tracks means usually a chaos, where the result of the race is too often a random one, often influenced by the rough racing level of the individuel drivers.
More laps: better drivers have more chances to win here. But people, who join the cup during a race, might have to wait sometimes too long (though: at small tracks the waitingtime is relative low - even with 8 laps). People, who like to drive for personal records, might have much more chances in 8 laps than in only 4 ;)

So, i like more or less:

usually: small tracks

35%: 10 races, 8 laps -> many cupchallenges + record improving
25%: 10 races, 6 laps -> many cupchallenges
05%: 10 races, 4 laps -> too short cup for my taste

10%: 20 races, 8 laps -> too long cup for a funserver for my taste
20%: 20 races, 6 laps -> too less cupchallenges
05%: 20 races, 4 laps -> waiting times between races might cause a too long looking cup

My option is missing:
20 Tracks, 4 Laps, at least 50% small tracks. Because long tracks are ok but not sooo many...

But as I said elsewhere: I think discussing this here is not representative, the active communuity seems to prefer longer tracks with more laps. And that is what the racing server is for.

The fun server should be for people who here and there want to join for a quick cup - so 4 laps, not so many big tracks and: FUN tracks. At the moment I hardly see fun tracks there. They only put tracks on it which do not look so perfectly on it but what's with the chaos tracks like Tungos, Speedway & Co? And I do not like 8 laps for a fun server. Fun servers should have less laps so that other people (e.g. not so constant drivers) also can win in a chaos race.

If we'd let the ones decide who visit this forum regularly this would turn the fun-server into a 2nd racing-server...

Another option would be making the 2nd server to an experimental fast car server. E.g. similar tracks but faster and bigger cars. (I'd prefer Impreza Rallysport etc.).

I think better drivers also have good chances on cups with less laps. Like you saw in TS 0.86 they still win often enough. But not so good drivers also here and there have the chance to win if there are less laps. I think that makes it more interesting especially for new drivers because if there was only the racing server they could get bored soon when they join and always are far behind without having a chance for a better position.
35%: 10 races, 8 laps -> many cupchallenges + record improving
I think record improving shoudn't be an aspect on the fun server. That's what the record server and maybe the racing server is for.
05%: 20 races, 4 laps -> waiting times between races might cause a too long looking cup
The waiting times could be changed...

My choice would be: 20 races with 6 laps, ~10 small (<15secs per lap), ~8 middle (15-30secs), ~2 long (30-60secs).

But the main problem with the fun server at the moment is, that the tracks are not really that funny. I loved the tracks in 0.86 where you had to bump from the bouncy walls, with lots of ice and stuff. But then, thats just me... (and maybe MikeNike 8) and a few others )

Not just you, me too. :-) And I think many others who liked these tracks left and therefore don't say there opinion here.

The problem is that 1.x neither has ice parts nor bouncy walls. You can make other funny tracks with the jumps (like "Jail" or "Jump!" etc.) but they aren't even on the fun server. Also regulars (who make more tracks) prefer making racing tracks than fun tracks.

Maybe they should open an Retro 0.86 server and offer some graphics pack so that old tracks do not look odd in the new version. I really miss the ice and the tracks with funny drawings.

Actually Hengari has made ice tiles for 1.x and there are some ice tracks on fun tracks server. At least one track on racing tracks has ice too - though not on track.

I would like 10 tracks with 5 laps and medium length tracks (about 15-20seconds) but we are speaking about the PTX fun-server right?

The idea for fun-server in the first place was that people who make tracks that are not really fun and not good enough to racing-server, get their tracks on the servers. I have heard that some trackmakers are whining why their tracks are not in the PTX and sending Froz emails about that.

Nothing wrong for asking to get tracks to servers but then again we would get PTX servers that were before dividing them to racing/fun. Horrible.

It would be good to review the fun-tracks with new view. Because there are more racing-tracks than fun-tracks some racing-tracks (short ones) could be moved to fun and drop some not-so-good fun-tracks.

Let's face the truth. Do anything you like, there are always people who are not happy about it.

I have some short tracks coming up after i finish them first.

That is why there should be two or three person who decide which tracks are on PTX-servers. Then there would be tracks that other people dont like but other likes.

And i would like very much tracks on these servers so you wont get bored. Now there is 70-80 tracks and if you drive much you get bored of these.

But it only my opinion....

Just to make sure:
10 or 20 races does not mean that at the server would be also only 10 or 20 tracks.

/tracks /clear
/tracks /addrnd 10

or 20 it means, when a new cup starts.
In the default track folder would be the number of random choiced tracks.
And in my opinion, 60 - 80 could be very nice, i think :)

i have read all the post and understand, for funny tracks you mean something like LAMER-TRACK? like chaotic-no sense-bumping-bouncing etc...?

IF you need some tracks like this its easy, for a boucing wall you can use the tyres tile, it have a good bouncing...

For another explain i wana read the yours opinion.

So why is it called fun server then? Then the name should be "PTX not really good and beautiful enough for regulars server".

I think the racing track should be the one discussed here in the forum. And then there should be the Fun-Tracks with lots of lame tracks (like they are called here) and more shorter tracks and then we'll see where the people go. As I already mentioned somewhere else if we'd let the regulars here decide about both servers than we'd have two racing servers with not much difference and a lot of none-regular players who do not join because there is no fun anymore.

I can hear from players wo do not frequent this forum so often that they also think there should be more short and more odd tracks. Do not forget that players who rather like the other sort of tracks are not so well represented here in the forum as they only like to play.

Great! :-)

That's your point of view and that's why there is a racing track server for players who see it the same way like you do.

I also think the FUN server should have weird and funny tracks - not good enough racing tracks don't have to be on any server at all.
