If I remember correctly this issue has been discussed also earlier but I didn't find it with search. Vista is not yet released so game support is what it is.

I think that when Vista is released and Ande tests TS with Vista the problem will be solved (or not).

You could try TS in Vista with disabling the Aero -style (or what was it's name) and trying the classic -style, disabling sounds and so on. There is also an output.log in TS directory which might tell you something.

The problem is probably (again) in the SDL library. If you want to test whether upgrading the library helps, do the following steps:

1. Go to the TS directory (Program Files/Jollygood Games/Turbo Sliders or similar).

2. Rename SDL.dll to SDL.old.dll

3. Download http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.11-win32.zip and unpack SDL.dll that is in that zip to the TS directory.

4. Test running the game. If the situation gets worse, delete the old SDL.dll and rename SDL.old.dll to SDL.dll.

5. Report here whether that helped.

In theory, updating SDL.dll could help XP players, too. I have understood that the graphics system has changed quite a bit and alpha blending may now be faster. But unfortunately, the system is not using hardware surfaces any more and there may be other problems. So if people test that, I would like to hear if it breaks or fixes anything.

I hope to be able to make a new version with updated drivers soon. I just happen to be very busy with many things now, including moving to a new house/apartment.

I just tested that, and it's not such a good idea (at least for me). The CPU load was continuously at 100%, and the FPS dropped to 30. :?

Sounds bad... If it is like that for the others, too, I don't think SDL can be upgraded. What resolution do you have? Does it work ok if you use 640 x 480?

So upgrading SDL had no effect? Or was there a new kind of error message?

Have you tried without sound and in window mode? You can try that by editing sliders.ini and setting AudioOn to 0 and FullScreen to 1.

I tested the updated SDL.dll and the game worked with less load (a quick test). Before the load was about 40-45% and after about 35-40%. Otherwise it seemed the same.

I tested it in windows -mode (1280x1024) in Windows XP with and without alpha blending (results and load was the same) driving Isletwist about one lap. I have nvidia's graphic gard.

I use a resolution of 1280x1024, in full screen mode. In windowed mode it works better (50FPS), but still 100% load. At 640x480, it works just fine in both windowed (20% load) and full screen (35%) mode. I'd still recommend the older version however, which gives me about 10% CPU load when I drive alone. ;)

Maybe you have done this already but have you tried to run the game in "Windows XP compatible mode"?
If not, here is how you do that:

1. Right click on sliders.exe and choose "properties"
2. Choose tab "Compatibility"
3. In the box named "Compatibility mode", check the box.
Then choose "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" in the drop-down-list.
4. Click "Ok" and you are done

I would need a recap of the current situation to consider what to do with this. Bad Vista support in SDL is one reason that makes it hard to make any new versions. Could someone with the latest Vista version test running the game with sound off, in windowed mode and with the new SDL libraries (link given above) to see if anything helps?

I've managed to play Turbo Sliders on Vista without any problems.

Hey Jeffrey, did you need to follow Ande's recommendations? Are you playing windowed or full screen? Is the sound working?

I have removed vista and installed xp again.

I had loss of FPS in other 3d games, so better stick with XP as its not a bad OS. Vista seems very hungry on resources.

But i had no trouble with sound and yes played full screen. What i did not try if joystick controls works as i am a keyboard player.

I have a friend of mine who just bought a laptop with vista, and he is going to install the game on it. I will check with him if he has any problems. At the moment he is in UK working there, will contact him this evening.

Ippon-Foei, would like to have you on my msn as i have many of your Ippon friends. My msn is jefcam@euroweb.net.mt
