Website Server??

Post by mark_burnett » Sat Jun 25, 2005 7:23 pm

How do you make a website run as a server? like the playtrix.net servers? they can not be someones computers running all of the time surely? if you know how and can tell me, how much bandwidth would you predict would be required to run a 3 race championship? i just want to know because my computer isnt the best and when im running the tournaments im trying to find the fairest way of doing it.

Website is perhaps not a correct term to describe the server machines but practically, the server machines are someone's computers running all the time (server being an automatic server). Sometimes, it may not be someone's personal computer but a hosted computer rented from some ISP.

You can estimate maximum bandwidth usages by going to Start Server menu, changing the maximum number of players and checking the bandwidth estimates. In reality, the requirements are probably much lower in average since there are the times between the races and servers are rarely full.

so in actual fact there would be no way for myself to use my website as my server for races then? it would have to be run from my computer? damn, ok. back to the drawing board as they say, maybe ill wipe my old PC and use that as my server, that may work quicker :s maybe.

Well, it depends on your web site :). But most probably, if you have a web site whose only use is to be a web site, it is very unprobable you can make it a game server.

Running a server on a shell account would be cool tho. Just like an IRC bot.
Please consider this:)

This is possible, read doc/README-autoserver.txt for more information. It, of course, depends on the shell account provider whether that is allowed. Running a server may take lots of network bandwidth and often simple sell accounts are not allowed to do that. Running servers may have been blocked by firewalls.
