Someone found a way to cheat :(

Post by JimMiE22o2 » Wed Mar 09, 2005 12:29 am

On the demo track Forestry, a player named Silkey ran 5 0.00 laps. They all counted. It's even on the ts1/umoco.. website! How did this happen?

I would like to get an answer from Slikey myself, too :). I will remove those 0.000 times when the next server update comes...

The first thing to do is find how the bug works then correct the bug.

No doubt about deleting this records.

I don't know. Not me...but that isn't interesting...

Surely it might be nice, if "Slikey" and all others, who imported the record, can delete the record by deleting the lines in the Forestry.rec file in sliders subfolder records. Same counts for Ande's record server...

It's a solution, but it won't be that good one, since it is still not sure, if that 0.000 was a cheat or an accident and or an bug in TS code.

If the record is deleted, it will be imported anyway earlier or later, so you have to delete it again. This kind of virus can be stopped only, if everyone who got that virus, is deleting it before giving another one the virus, in other words ;)

But, in other words..., the same kind of virus can maybe exist later too, anyway if we stop the current one or not.
So, if people keep on importing by themselves or due to others exports, they are not protected against getting that virus ;)

Well, we can delete it in our record files...ALL...
or/and we "wait" until we (99% Ande and 1% the TS community...) found the problem by ourselves...

But...when keeping importing records, it makes not much sense to delete the virus, so keeping it won't hurt too much, since you don't invest your time to delete it (again and again). So, actually it might be an alternative...
But actually we all don't want that virus, so maybe we should delete it AND keep a time long not importing records...until enough players deleted the virus.
And if you import the virus later accidently, even you don't know it yet, just take care before exporting records. Just have a short look, if you have the virus...
Until you don't know, if you have NOT got the virus after importing records, you might not export your records, since you don't know, if you have the virus.

But...I don't believe, that this record will be so fast, if ever, from all recordfolders deleted...
I can make a short tool maybe for that case, if wished, which is searching in records folder all 0.000 record entries, which will be automatically deleted. With some later coming features i think, i would be also able to create an easy or maybe later improved time-limit algorithm, which is deleting for each special car all records under a special limit - of course on a very safe explained way, so that no real records will be deleted.

If you think at least 10% of TS players read this forum and 5% read your post here, it's impossible to stop that "virus".

But if Ande make a little change on FORESTRY, like add a Tree or Rock in anyplace on track. The forestry's hash will change, when he release the next 1.04 , he could remove the old forestry and put the new, with a new hash. I know that all other people records from this track will be removed as slikey's will too. It's a price we have to play to ensure anyone will later upload that f*** 0.000 rec again.

lol.. why do you start a vote if you expect everyone to vote on the 1st possibility? :D

That is another solution, yes...but no good one.
And this solution we should first think about, when the bug of 0.000 records is fixed. I wonder, if the record was made local or online or by another way, which would help us to find what has caused this problem.

I dont't know much about the the technical side of things, but couldn't the serverside be programmed to take realistic values? i.e only implementing the command on the condition that lap time>0.1. Perhaps this time was set by a glitch and wouldn't work for values more than 0s.

The record server has been updated to a version which won't accept those 0.000 times any more. It still remains to be investigated what really caused those times but at least this helps a bit... That fix will be in 1.0.4 clients, too.
