Slow FPS performance on Linux

Post by [v8]Sicofonia » Mon Dec 24, 2007 5:11 pm

Hi there, I'm running TS on Ubuntu and I've noticed that the game runs incredibly slow compared to windows xp (on same PC and same graphic settings). The highest FPS value I get is 27 :?

These are the settings:
Resolution: 1024x768, everything else AS DEFAULT

I have activated graphic acceleration, and it makes no difference. I execute the file sliders.linux.static, as the others won't work. Is such performance normal?? Am I doing something wrong??

Any help is really appreciated folks, thanks in advance.

This issue has been discussed before and there are some tips to give. Topic viewtopic.php?t=346 contains some tips about graphic drivers and settings. The main tips are that you should not use the composite (transparency) effects (compiz) which are available in the newest Ubuntu and to update your graphics drivers. Also try setting off the alpha rendering in TS.

The sliders.linux should also work if you have all the needed libraries installed. You can use the "ldd" command to check it out. F.ex. type in the terminal at Sliders-directory: ldd sliders.linux and check if you're missing something. The static and normal binaries doesn't have noticeable performance difference.

TS needs some more juice when played in Linux and it runs better in windowed-mode. About 2GHz CPU and decent graphics card (nvidia Geforce 4) seems to be enough.

Thank you very much for your reply :D . I did a couple of things: disabled Compiz, alpha blending, and run the game in window mode. So I have improved the FPS performance by 10, I mean 37-34. But sadly, this is not enough.

Basically my PC is an AMD Sempron 3 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, and GeForce 6600 256 MB. I think it should run smooth. I installed the privative controllers from nVidia, so I don't know what to do right now...

Anyways, thank you for your quick reply again ;)

Well, finally I managed to solve my problem. I just reduced the resolution to 800x600 (after disabling Compiz, Alpha rendering) and the game ran fine. It's not what I've expected but it is playable at least.

bye bye

One more tip:
Try to get the sliders.linux -binary to work, it might be faster than the static version.

After that, try updating your SDL-libraries like Ande suggested when problems with Vista, it also helps on Windows XP and might help also on Linux to reduce the CPU load. Just download the Linux-version of the library and put it in TS directory. The issue and updating SDL was discussed at: viewtopic.php?t=883

Ok, I got the sliders.linux working (I needed the libpng.so.3 which I installed by Synaptic), and updated the SDL libraries. It seems that did the trick, now I can play on 1024x768 at reasonable performance :D :D

Thank you again, I hope this post can be useful for more players to come ;)
