Track making competition 2008 - Rough tracks

Post by Jarno » Fri Feb 01, 2008 4:36 pm

Hello all trackmakers.

Rough tracks competition:
Tracks should sent to c2214@jamk.fi before 15.2.(15.2. is last day when you can send) So dont post tracks/links in this topic.
Email should contain next information: Trackname, maker and some introducing if liked with suggested cars or anything you want to tell about it.
Track should be packed with .zip format and that .zip should contain all of these things: .trk and .pat files, all of your own tile files and also a picture of a track(.jpg format is recommend). Track cant be over 1mb big. Only rough tracks are allowed in this competition(so try to think what makes track a good for rough racing).
Track have to be new one. So you cant pick your best ever made track and send that. You really have to make new one.
Remember also that track can be as wide and large as you want but it should be drivable with default cars. Players arent force to use any other cars.
Only one track per trackmaker.

15.2. There will be racing with these new tracks so everyone is welcome to join.

16.2. i place links to tracks and pictures in forum and then voting starts. All of you can vote once and voting happened by placing three best tracks for your opinion in order 1. 2. 3. Voting happened in forum by replying this post.

For example:
1.Pu_Valli
2.J_Basring
3.hg_fastlane

You can also give some comments.

Voting end first of march when we know three best tracks of this competition.

This means that tracks shouldn't be made for RDP-anti either? Though it doesn't matter very much because almost every track that is drivable with anti is drivable with rdp too. :)

It can be made for RDP-anti for example but it should be drivable with default cars too.

1. eal_spankwank (funny and enjoyable, good laughs)
2. et_remen (nice one, i love it but i hate that hairpin with jumps, grrrhm)
3. j_destruction (enoyable, i like the end part of the track)
-----------------
4. bastard (good addition to rough tracks with anti, not as best on with rdp-anti)
5. crazyice (very crazy, you get out of control if you have too heavy bounce with that wall thing)
6. jn_smallncreepy (possible to get stuck between the hay bales)
7. fox-shortone (nice and small, very basic)
8. de_fly (like normal track with jumps added)
0. k-marathon (250 laps? sure, with damage and fuel on)

nice tracks, hope there is more tracks on next rough tracks compo :)

8. jn_smallncreepy: This is not rough, this is just wacky. More like an obstacle course than a track. Some good obstacles though. 3/10

7. fox-shortone: Looks nice, that's about it. Very hard to bump anyone out, it's like an ordinary track with crossovers. 4/10

6. Bastard: Too tight, walls are really annoying. Hard to ram anyone out when they just bounce back in my way from the wall. I can see he put plenty of effort in, but I just don't like racing on that track. Plus I got a bit lost on my first run. 4.5/10

5. de_fly: At first it seemed really boring, but that hidden second layer adds quite a bit of fun to the track :). However cool add-ons that don't make it more rough don't get many extra points. Plus it is too short. 5.5/10

4. crazyice: Good rough track, however I hate the super bouncy-wouncy tiles and ice isn't my friend either. Not very many places where to ram others out (a few, but could be more). Oh and I hate the jump crossing where you can get trapped. 6.0/10

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. j_destruction: such promise such quality and then he has to go and ruin it with the ending part. It looks like you did the first 6 corners and then thought, oh screw it let's finish this quickly :). 7.5/10

2. et_remen: it's fun, the default cars work rather well on these. A bit too dangerous with rdp though. Plenty of "pwnage points". It's rough alright 8.0/10

1. k-marathon: bigger is better? The sheer size and quality of this track is amazing. it seems it has several other popular rough tracks built into it. One lap is 3 minutes. When this track is on the server track list the chat is flled with awe, fear and despair :). I can't help but love it :D. I'm giving extra points for the work that had to go into this. 10/10

1. J_Destruction
Great track by Jarno as always. The slalom part is indeed a bit of a cheap solution, you could've done much more with that. Still, the unrivaled quality and looks of the eastern part make it my personal favorite.

2. eal_spankwank
It's kind of lacking in the looks department, and something crazy is missing. Really enjoyable though, since there are plenty of pawning opportunities to be found.

3. Et_Remen
Nice. You can get pawned really bad here, but its curves seem a bit too repetitive.

---------------------------------

4. CrazyIce
Funny track at first sight, but there are hardly any pawning opportunities. Bonus points for innovation.

5. Fox_Shortone
Looks good, but something is missing.

6. K-Marathon
Great work, it has to be said, but I don't think it works too well in rough cups. By the time you get to all the fun parts, you'll be driving all alone. :)

7. de_Fly
This double-layer system is a nice idea, but the implementation could use a little work: you lose too much time jumping on the 2nd layer. Still, it's funny as hell to drive straight through your opponents. :D

8. Bastard
It's a bastard all right. I got kind of lost in my first race here, and there simply aren't enough overtaking spots for it to make it as a rough track.

9. Jn_Smallncreepy
Janne has lost his mind :D

What's the second layer on dede's track that everyone is talking about? :? I seem to have missed something, obviously..

If you take the jump above the start finish line you'll jump on an invisible elevated road, notice carefully and eventually the car will fall back on the road at the entrance to the detour again or if you go off track

de_Fly has two different levels, 1st is the normal track which you see and the other is kinda like unvisible bridge over the track.

If you open up de_Fly's test-pat.png and see its color index which is 31 and compare it to misc2.png bridge's color index which is also 31, you should figure it out.

Very clever usage of level tiles, Tijny.

edit: damnit, nolan was faster.

For those of you wondering, I didn't make the track; I simply showed dede how to make the elevated road.

Well yep, it doesn't work on 3 laps cup. It should be quite funny with many players and many laps (it's a small track after all). Maybe I should've sent the "normal" track instead of this one :(

I take some certain elements to value the tracks:

Fun: (very important: above all other categories, fun counts the most)
Depends on all categories and all other not mentioned things (track length for example).

Bugs: (very important: bugs in the track ruin the whole track)
Checklines must be the way the author want them to be. Unwanted shortcuts should not exist.
If people miss checklines without knowledge, they will fall back 1 lap - this should never happen in a track.
Invisible walls should exist only, if they are meant by the author (but if they aren't liked, they don't help to get a better rating anyway)
Example: bridgebugs can nerv.

Roughness: (very important: push offroad possibilities)
Rough racing needs a course where pushing (and maybe tactical blocking) can be honoured.
This includes for example: well placed 180 degree turns.

Innovation: (important: special elements improving the fun)
Whatever improves the fun to drive this track (for rough racers and other maybe also other kind of drivers)

Traffic: (important: there shouldn't be traffic)
Paying for the mistake of a car crashing in front of you can cause a funny mass of cars crashing into 1 car.
It can be funny, but it can nerv too.
In rough racing cups, the best rough racers should win and shouldn't be punished by random bad luck (a car in front crashes and you have no space to move around him).

Chaos: (semi important: too much chaos is bad)
A bit is funny, but too much is bad.
Possibilities to crash by crossings can ruin an actually safe lead of the race into a desaster.
That's the spirit of "Crash & Burn", more or less.
In addition it gives drivers behind the possibility to still win, even if they are many seconds behind the leader...
The basic rough race tracks shouldn't be full of crossings though, should they? Though...these are all just my opinions..
Next to crossing, evil placed obstacles or something similar placed on the track can cause someone to crash and cars behind to crash into the first crashed car.
A few are funny/can be good, but too many can be bad.

Pwn-Factor: (semi important: size of importance to not get pushed/blocked offroad/into a death- or prisonzone)
Jumps over zones where you can be trapped can be spicy.
Usually though, if you fight in a rough race cup for the win and you get trapped once in such a zone, you'll get 0 pts, which could mean you lose the cup.
Next to the punishment a) the huge cupinfluence, it b) will be nervy to wait until the race end.
Other elements, like ice or something similar behind 180 degree turns or let's say "push offroad possibilities" can scale the pwn-factor, which means: making a good push will be awarded more and getting pushed offroad be punished more.
I personally prefer a low or medium pwn-factor though, since for example: losing 1, maybe 2 or 3 places is punishment enough, but losing a couple of more positions due to 1 single push can be fun for the one part but i've seen people getting crazy angry when getting pwned that way^^ (by a good push or just bad luck)

Smoothness/Flow: (semi important: tracks which are too hard can cause a lack of fun)
Lucky parts, where you can easily crash every single time and get a huge punishment if you crash, can result in having less fun playing the track.

Design: (semi important: good looking tracks can mean a better rating)
Simple looking (retro) tracks can be great, but a nice design can be appreciated too...

The ratings and points you can get:
Nr, Scale Factor, Description
1 05 Fun = how often i would like to drive the track
2 03 Functionality = no bugs
3 03 Roughness = amount and quality of basic rough parts of the track
4 02 Innovation = cleverness/quality, elements
5 02 No Traffic = no crazy traffic is good
6 01 No Chaos = not too much chaos is good
7 01 Pwn-Factor = funny is good, frustrating is bad
8 01 Smoothness = bad driveability which hurts the fingers is bad :P
9 01 Design = when you like the track due to its design, that's a good thing ;)

I give points from 0 to 5 (5 is best) for each category

Code: Select all

# Pts (Pts) Trackname
1. 66 (2 4 5 5 3 2 3 3 5) k-Marathon
2. 59 (2 5 3 3 3 5 3 4 1) de_Fly
3. 56 (2 4 4 2 4 3 3 3 1) eal_Spankwank (depending on where you get pushed out, you go back to track and miss a checkline)
4. 52 (1 5 3 4 3 2 4 2 1) J_Destruction
4. 52 (2 4 3 3 3 1 3 2 3) Et_Remen (shortcuts exist -> all 180 degrees against wanted driving line)
6. 49 (1 5 3 5 2 2 2 0 2) Jn_Smallncreepy
6. 49 (2 5 2 3 3 1 1 1 3) CrazyIce
6. 49 (2 4 3 1 4 2 2 3 1) fox-shortonev2 (invisible wall and not all checklines are perfectly wide enough)
9. 34 (1 5 1 2 1 1 1 1 4) Bastard

My supervotes:

1. k-Marathon
First track where I probably won't be lapping Tijny in a 3 laps race.

2. CrazyIce
There's everything.

3. Et_Remen
Well... it's dp!

-----------------------------------------------

4. Fox-shortone
Basic track.

5. Bastard
Name is nice... I guess.

6. eal_spankwank
I'm taking into account that it's made by xzeal so my expectations weren't that high... but it's still lame.

7. J_Destruction
ROFLOL MAUNOKASA

8. Jn_Smallncreepy

ROFLOL JANNE

9. de_Fly
or was it Flu
ROFLOL CULO

Could you clarify a bit, please? :) I'm not saying you're entirely wrong here, but I certainly didn't intend for any shortcuts to make it to the final version of the track. So, explain a bit what you mean.. what's up with those 180 degree turns? :)

@Etmil
Check the parts where you have to drive a circle around 1 obstacle.
In 4 cases you placed only 1 checkline there. But especially in 2 cases 2 checklines are really needed - else people can skip driving a circle and just drive slalom and go ahead. Check the right upper side of your track..

1. fox-shortone - just a nice rough-track. Only thing about is that there isn't any "crazy" stuff :)
2. j_destruction - some nice idears, but I think without the first jump it would be a lot better
3. de_fly - too cool with the 2 levels :D
-----------------
4. eal_spankwank - nice, but I feel like something is missing
5. et_remen - Lightmap is fucked up, the house with the jumps that could get you into jail.. i don't like that... but nice with the tires
6. k-marathon - Loooong track, and some really nice parts.. but.. why all those bridges and jumps over roads ?! :( ..
7. jn_smallncreepy - Maybe a little too creepy ? :)
8. bastard - good idears, but i do not like fences all around a rought track (you can't hit each other)
In my new website you can find my tracks and cars!

Hope you will enjoy!

I'd like to congratulate with all trackmakers: tracks were very very good. It has been really hard voting for a winner, and finding a good criteria to rank them. I'm sorry if some votes are too low, but I had to penalize those tracks with bugs or bad implementations to get a top3 (all tracks were worth of top3 otherwise).
Normally I also rank my own track, but this time it has been already too hard giving an objective vote to other tracks, since I started to hate some tracks when driving it with rdp antislider.

Bastard | vote 5.5
Track is quite chaotic, and I got lost the first two times I drove it. Some arrows could help. Extra bonus (+0.5) since this was one of the very fist tracks by Scud ;)

k-marathon | vote 8
Keppana lost one week building this. Track is really amazing. I don't like the idea of those prisons, since the track is very long: I'm giving a big penalization (-2.0) for this reason.

eal_spankwank | vote 7.5
Easy, simple. No superbouncy obstacles, no speed-tarmac. Skills count more than luck, but fun is granted because of those tight corners and crossroads. Very good.

J_destruction | vote 7
Not so lovely when you drive it for the first time (99% of times you get stuch to those invisible -because of the color- tyres). Those arrows in the last part are quite confusing. But all in all, a good track.

fox-shortone | vote 6.5
A basic rough racing track. Too bad that there's an invisible object in the middle part (-0.5).

et_remen | vote 5.5
Oh damn, I really thought this track could get to top3, but those checkpoint bugs are really bad (huge penalization, -2.0). Little bonus (+0.5) because I won all races in this track, haha :D

CrazyIce | vote 8
Hehe, those bouncy walls are fun, unless you play them with rdp-antislider (they become irritating and dangerous - I'm not giving any penalization for this, since RDP isn't a default car). Track is funny and requires some jump-skills in the very first part. Good idea and good implementation.

Jn_Smallncreepy | vote 6.5
Track is too much chaotic. I had to drive it again and again to find something good or bad, but I just can't like/hate it fully.

To summarize:
1. k-marathon
2. CrazyIce
3. eal_spankwank

Finally a victorius track. I planned to make the ultimate rough track featuring most kind of todays gliches, where is something for everybody. An idea for F1 person names on track I got from the old Nurburgring track, the super long track where is textures and paintings all over the track tarmac. If you don't remember this track for anything else, you will remember that as a very long track. I could have let the Schumi's box as breakable. Thanks to everybody for the votes! :)
