creating your own server?
I've got a question about the start server option.
When I do so (I leave all settings as they are) and someone i know trys to connect to it, it says something like: "behind firewall" (i dont know the exact thing since I'm having it in dutch)
Could someone please tell me how you can do it the right way
PS. if someone comes up whit command lines or sometthing please also tell where you have to put them in
PPS. I'm using the 1.00 Demo version

Is the other player trying to connect using the server list or by typing the direct IP in the connect menu?Edward wrote:I've got a question about the start server option.

The troubleshooting document (accessed via start menu -> Jollygood -> TS -> manual -> troubleshooting) should help more but if there is a firewall that does not allow other people to connect to your machine, you must allow this. The solution depends on your ISP and your firewall so I cannot help without knowing more.

If direct IP connect did not work either, it means that for some reason other player's TCP packets to your port 6655 do not get to your machine. I assume that the other player has tried connecting to other machines and it has worked so probably the most problem is that either your machine or your ISP is not allowing TCP connects to port 6655. If you have no firewalls installed, it could be that the reason is your ISP. Some ISPs don't let their customers run their own servers, but to know if this is the reason, you should ask it from them (they must have some kind of mail address where you can ask things like that). If your ISP is not blocking the port, it may still be that your machine is running a firewall, for example with XP SP2, a firewall is automatically on.Edward wrote:We tried both ways.
We also tried it with and without master server.
It could be me but I don't even know if I even have a Firewall. I do have a Anti Spyware program running.
Does it matter what you fill in for location. I tried the one that was already there and my own IP.

By ISP I mean your internet service provider - from whom you have bought or otherwise acquired your internet connection. It might be a good idea to mail or phone their helpdesk about the problem. What you are trying to do is to run a game server in port 6655 (both TCP and UDP) but for some reason, others cannot get their packets through.Anonymous wrote:Sorry I don't know what ISP is/means.
Others said it was because of my router. I tried to unplug it and put my internet cable directly in the comp, but then I ended up with no internet at all for some unknown reason.
BTW: I Have Windows XP Profesional editeion
I can also try to help but I would need to know details about your connection - are you running the default Windows firewall, what kind of connection you have, what routers you use, does your ISP block ports (and what) etc.

I~ve tried other ports like 21, 64000 and it keeps saying that the server is behind a firewall or proxy, but i can use e-mule on this pc that uses ports 4242, 2304 and many others. I Tried these ports with TS, and didnt work too.road oktane wrote:Ande, i would know if its possible to create a server using another port instead of 6655 or 6654, cause i`m behind a firewall that blocks these.
Is there something i can do? I~m on win98.
You will probably have to "reset" the internet connection if you switch from router to direct connection. Switch off the power to the cable or DSL box you have, wait for 30 seconds and then power on the box again. You might also want to restart your computer at this point, but Windows XP should cope with the change of internet connection just fine.Anonymous wrote:Sorry I don't know what ISP is/means.

When you are connecting a server via server list and during connect, you see the text that the server is probably behind a firewall, it does necessarily mean that the server is blocking those ports. It may also be that the HTTP connection from the server to the master server has gone through a proxy that has changed the originating IP address in which case the master server does not receive the correct IP. If you know your IP or know how to find it out (for example, go to start menu -> run -> command -> ipconfig), you can check if the IP you are seeing in the server list is correct. If it is not, you can put the correct IP in your server info by starting that text with IP:127.0.0.1 where 127.0.0.1 is your real IP.road oktane wrote:I~ve tried other ports like 21, 64000 and it keeps saying that the server is behind a firewall or proxy, but i can use e-mule on this pc that uses ports 4242, 2304 and many others. -I've got a Cable Connection from Chello (UPC) (you probably don't know it).I can also try to help but I would need to know details about your connection - are you running the default Windows firewall, what kind of connection you have, what routers you use, does your ISP block ports (and what) etc.
-I don't know if I run the default firewall, where can I see this?
-I've got a sweex router, that goes into this PC and into a another laptop
-I don't know if the connection blocks ports and I don't think it would help if I call a helpdesk cause they always give you the wrong persons and you end up with long calls and still no info.

There are lots of servers online all the time and I have never seen any other related problems but ones that have been caused by packets being dropped by firewalls. When you start a server and don't get any errors, your game opens TCP and UDP port 6655 and if another player can make a TCP packet reach that port in your machine, a connection is established. There is not much in the game code that could be broken in this matter but for some reason, those packets do not get to their destination.Edward wrote:I really wonder if it's not something with the game or servers? I mean a lot of my friends try to make one and not one succeeded. I also let my router enable the 6655 port but with no succes. And I don't run any firewall.
Do your friends have the same internet service provider? It could be that the ISP does not allow hosting servers. That is something you should really ask from your ISP. There could be certain ports that can be used (you can change the server port in network settings). Or it could be that your machine is behind a NAT system so that your IP that is showing to the outside world is different from the one it actually is. If your IP you see with start menu -> run... -> command -> ipconfig starts with 10.* or 192.168.*, this is probably the case.
Can everyone play in the public servers available via the server list? Have you tried connecting using the direct IP?

it shows 192.168.* when I run ipconfig. If your IP you see with start menu -> run... -> command -> ipconfig starts with 10.* or 192.168.*, this is probably the case.
So what can I do about it?
My friends have different providers. We can all enter servers on the server list and I have managed to connect to direct IP some other people I only know from the internet in the 0.86 Beta version and I could play with them without problems. So it's probably the problem of the one who hosts (me and my friends in this case).
Yes, now I may know your problem but unfortunately, I don't know if there is an easy solution to it.Anonymous wrote:it shows 192.168.* when I run ipconfig. If your IP you see with start menu -> run... -> command -> ipconfig starts with 10.* or 192.168.*, this is probably the case.

You are probably behind a NAT system, meaning that your internal IP is a private IP that does not show to outside world. Instead, when you make a connection outside, there is a router that maps your private IP 192.168.* to something else and when other machines send reply packets to your machine, the router knows they must be sent to your private IP address (even though they are in fact addressed to the router IP).
The good side in this system is that one only needs one global IP address which many machines, including yours, can use. The bad thing is, that as you have noticed, hosting servers become hard if not impossible. You should somehow be able to tell the NAT router that when it receives a TCP packet to a certain port, it is directed to your private IP. Then your friends could connect your server by connecting the server IP at that certain port. The problem is how to make that router configuring. It may be something that your ISP does not want to do. There is also the possibility that it is your ADSL modem (or something similar) that makes the NATting. In this case, it could be possible for you to do the configuring, even though it may be hard. It would seem that contacting your ISP is unfortunately the only option

well I got some experiences with contacting my ISP and they couldn't even explain to me how I could get my modem to work properly
. They just kept repeating the steps exactly the way they were writtin in the intruction manual that they sended with the modem, like I was a moron or something
. I'll ask my sisters boyfriend if he can fix it for me. He's into the ICP thing and stuff and works for a company who works with stuff like this. Thanks for the info Ande. I really hope it's gonna work cause I'm planning to buy the full version but if I can't host it would really suck.

Sorry but what exactly is your problem? I didn't find your original problem in this thread (you may have used another name). Do you have problems hosting a server, connecting public servers or connecting a server made by your friends?JimMiE22o2 wrote: Can someone help...
If you have problems hosting your own server, there are several possible reasons for this but I would need more information on your connection. If you have a NAT system on (in this case, your IP is probably 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x), it may be really hard to make the server work since your IP address is private to the outside world and you should be able to configure the machine (ADSL box, a router or whatever) that you are using to connect the Internet. It would be best to ask your ISP, but I know it may be hard to get anything useful from them
