Your top 5 bands/artists

Post by Mouse » Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:37 pm

I'm going to follow up on the top-5 movies topic, as I said i would, so....

What are your top 5 bands/artists? YOUR top 5. Anything from Metal / rap / boy bands.. whatever you like. Maybe add a little info on what you like about them. Favorite album(s)?

Mine:

1 - Muse - Love. This. Band. All 4 of their albums are great and seem to get better over time. Love their style and sound. Matthew Bellamy (singer, lead guitar) is awesome.
2 - Iron Maiden - "No one can do these riffs! Except Maiden." Epic songs. Hallowed be thy Name is amazing. First 5 albums when Bruce Dickinson joined are the best.
3 - Rush - Brilliant in every area; vocals, guitar, bass and of course drums. Not into their synthesizer heavy days as much though. Moving Pictures is a great album. 2112 is an epic song.
4 - Nirvana - One of my first known bands, so I have a sweet spot for them.
5 - Metallica - Another band from my early days. Love their early stuff, especially Ride the Lightening (album).

Now, yours..? :)

1. Offspring
2. Greenday
3. Blink 182

Still alive, my TS playlist is 90% about those. But I like almost all kind of music. It's just better if it has some rhythm though. Ah, I don't like metal. I guess it's a bit too hard for my ears.

In no particular order:

Maximum the Hormone - A Japanese I-have-no-idea-what-genre-band usually kinda metal-ish, but they got songs I'd label as pop and practically every other genre.
JMKE - Estonian punk
The 69 eyes - Finnish rock, can't get enough of the album "Paris kills"
System of a down - no comment
Kenji Ohtsuki - a Japanese rock musician.

OK, Scorpio, so you're a Dream Theater fan. Dude, you don't know the vocalist? or Bassist? Weak! Come on man, at least learn some about the band before you call them your favorite! John Myung is a very talented man, and a founding member of the band at thay.

I'm not doubting they can play pretty much anything (in their early days, they did gigs covering full albums of Metallica and Maiden). Really every member is among the best in the world at their respective areas.

I'm hoping you don't just listen to Systematic Chaos... Dream Theater has better stuff than that. if you do not listen to Scenes from a Memory... I won't know what to say to you! It's one my favorite albums I own, It's got a damn good story too. I know you're a young guy, so maybe their softer melodic stuff does not appeal to you, but listen to "Home" and you will be a happy kid, as Rudess and Petrucci will blow your brains out. Please also, listen to anything from Six Degrees ("Glass Prison")...

Anyway, not an attack, Scorpio, just wanted to learn ya' some Dream Theater since you're a fan.

Well, many people look past Dream Theater because they're not in the spotlight. They are not a band that pushes their music in videos, on radio ect... which is why they only have only one real hit (Pull me Under). Because of this, people may think they're not as good as popular bands like Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth ect... Dream Theater is one incredibly talented band.

I do agree with Scorpio in that John Petrucci is amazing. For sure, one of the best in the world, which is why he has gone on solo tours (six of them) with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and other greats.

See here:

Also this vid (Portnoy drumming):

Dream Theater live performing "Home":

By the way, check out Liquid Tension Experiment. Which is a side project of Petrucci, Rudess and Portnoy, with a different bassist (Tony Levin). It's mostly all insane instrumentals. :)

I didnt meant they are not talented as Maiden or Metallica... Maybe they are even more talented but something is still missing. Hard to tell what im trying to say because of my poor english... Lets try this way--->Metal legends: Black Sabath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica... Cant put Dream Theater on that category(even as good they are). Hope you got my point

Well, for one, DT is in a bit of a different genre, they do progressive metal, so it puts them in a different area than those other bands.

But i get your point. The main thing is:

bands you listed: all VERY popular, everyone knows them.
DT: they stay out of the spotlight

And yes, Images and Words is very good, Pull me Under is one of my favorite tunes. :)

But i would say:

The Doors
Deep purple
Jethro Tull
Van Der Graaf Generator
Frank Zappa

And in portuguese:

José Mario Branco
Jose Afonso
Sergio Godinho
Chico Buarque
Bacamarte

I hear mostly Progressive Rock or Avant Garde, Experimental stuff such as zappa himself and Mike Patton weird projects.
