Track making competition 2007 Part I

Post by Jarno » Wed Feb 28, 2007 10:33 am

Hello all trackmakers.

I know there is a lot trackmakers around, good ones and not so good ones. Someone likes to make tracks only with default tiles and someone likes to use own tiles. Someone likes large tracks and someone small tracks. This competition is for all of you. You can do track what ever you like to participate. Best part of this is that you guys can decide which track is best.

We saw last time that this was popular competition and gave lot to talk about. This year there is gonna be four track making competitions. They all are independent and equal. But after fourt competition in january 2008 there will be Voting about best track of 2007. In that final competition you cant make new tracks but all of those tracks which have been made for these four competitions are automatically in.

Important info about competition:
Tracks should sent to c2214@jamk.fi before 15.3.(15.3. is last day when you can send) So dont post tracks/links in this topic.
Email should contain next information: Trackname, maker and some introducing if liked with suggested cars or anything you want to tell about it.
Track should be packed with .zip format and that .zip should contain all of these things: .trk and .pat files, all of your own tile files and also a picture of a track(.jpg format is recommend). Track cant be over 1mb big. Only racing tracks are allowed in this competition.
Track have to be new one. So you cant pick your best ever made track and send that. You really have to make new one.
Remember also that track can be as wide and large as you want but it should be drivable with default cars. Players arent force to use any other cars.
Only one track per trackmaker.

16.3. i place links to tracks and pictures in forum and then voting starts. All of you can vote once and voting happened by placing three best tracks for your opinion in order 1. 2. 3. Voting happened in forum by replying this post.

For example:
1.Pu_Valli
2.J_Basring
3.hg_fastlane

You can also give some comments.

Thanks all trackmakers for doing some nice tracks. Here they are know, nine hard worked and well thought tracks. Voting progress starts now. Above is instructions how to vote. Remember that you cant vote your own track.

We are looking best tracks so all areas are important. Well of course all of you have different weights of things but try to think of all directions when voting.

Voting end last day of march when we know three best tracks of competition.

Sounds nice, count me in.

Perhaps for the next competition, there can be 2 categories?
- Tracks with ONLY default tiles
- Tracks containing custom tiles

I love to make photoshopped tracks, but i feel it is a waste of time for this competition, because i know most people will look only at default style tracks.

I would enjoy making a default and PS track. :)

PS, is it possible 2 people can work on a track?

Are you sure? In first competition 8 of 20 voted for photoshopped track and only 2 photoshopped track took part.

Based on the conversations about Photoshop tracks [on this form] i would say that there a quite a few people who prefer default > PS tracks.

And then there are very few people who prefer PS > default tracks

It would be nice to have 2 categories for each style track, to eliminate any track style preference from voting. People who prefer one style over another will probably vote for his preferred style (which is not so fair).

Again this time, i may not submit a track. March 6-13 i will be away from home, so i may not have time to do any serious work..... I will try though! :)

Because there is going to be about 10 tracks in this competition it wouldn't be good idea to have 5+5tracks. I think almost everyone vote how they like track so it doesnt matter if it is PS- or default-style track. Of course that 1mb limit for track size limits usage of custom tiles.
Lets stick with orginal plan.

2people can work on a track but then they cant do own track anymore. And of course then glory isnt just for you :)

Well, actually I made a track for this competition, I spent about 5 hours for it. But after that I thought "why do I have to make a track just for a stupid contest, when I can use it for having a funny competition?". As you probably know, I like very much having cups with new tracks: everyone at the same level, real skills are shown, etc. It's very hard finding unreleased tracks for my cups. This is why I think it's more useful using unreleased tracks for my competitions instead of sending them to a contest.
I asked Jarno if it was ok releasing the track Sunday 11 March (Ippon Racing Tournament 2), but he said that rules are rules. Since I won't start making 1 track/week, I'll use my tracks mainly for my cups.
I still don't get why this contest doesn't work like this: track must be released max 1 month before the competition. In this way every trackmaker could use his own track before (in tournaments, own cups, etc..) -> more fun for everyone and people more informed about tracks -> better votes.

Well, this would mean that much more guys will try to advertise their own tracks hosting servers, cups, etc.. Isn't that good?

humm.. Best thing could be publishing these tracks in a tournament. After which links would be put here in the forum and people could start voting. Players who have made a track would be allowed in race and others too if there's enough space. That would be a great tournament. ~10 new tracks in a tournament with skilful players. I'd like to see that.

Maybe we could do that in part 2 of track making competition?

dede you suggestion doesnt work because then tracks wouldnt be equal then. Of course that would force people to advertise tracks but everyone wouldnt do this anyway. So then again tracks wouldnt be equal.

limp-pu: This sound ok but we can do this already. Just when tracks are published we could start tournament in same time. Actually i can make server at 0:00 in 16th day with these new tracks. I know its late but then there would be chance to drive these all together.
To make one bigger publishing tournament, well maybe in part II :)

Infact my suggestion wasn't for this competition: using tracks in that way would mean more fun for everyone. When I create a track, I want to have fun with it (using it in my cups, hosting a server with it...) -> that's my goal. If joining this competition means not reaching my goal, then I won't join it. Simple :)

This time i will download all tracks, and start a little cup with some GPOR friends. Then we can vote. :)

Perhaps my track is a bit boring, i made the design while in a car trip.... so... yeah. :P But i wanted to participate in this contest anyway, so i sent.

Tracks look very nice guys! I look forward to playing them!

Okay, first of all, I must say that this competition is far more 'even' and tougher, because there were many tracks that I liked. I drove them all with AntiSlider, because well.. that's my favourite car. So my evaluation is as follows:

Crimond

My own track. Can't rate this, so decide for yourself :)

JC_Montegi

Track shape is quite good, but like Jeffrey's previous track, this is very wide and not really good for default cars. I would definitely like it a lot more if it were narrow. Scenery design is well done and another bonus point would come from me if it had a good lightmap.

J_CeltaAmore

Better than Jarno's previous competition track. From the looks of the picture, I'd give it a lower rating but when I drove it, I liked it a lot more. Lightmap is very well done. Left part of the track could use some sharper turns. Scenery is beautiful.

Jn_Starr

Track shape is magnificent. The gravel combined with grass looks beautiful, but in some turns the car starts sliding 'cause of the gravel [if you take the curve tight]. Anyway, could use some lightmap. Otherwise well done.

Limp_Podiums

Shape is okay. But the pitstop part could be handled a little better, especially the entrance part. Bottom left corner of the track is a bit empty and the scenery could be worked on a bit more. Love the corner near the second [bottom] sand part.

eal_light

At first I was a bit puzzled about what the track was made of but afterwards realized it was all those white lines. Left me wondering why you made such a choice for the track terrain part. Can't say anything bad about track shape. It's definitely 'different' from the others. Sand all over might make it a bit boring. Lightmap would improve it as well.

RJ_Dickström

Of course.. yet another dickshaped track in our contest :P Anyway, idea was used in last competition, so kind of.. outdated. Grass scenery only.. no lightmap. Don't know.. nothing more to say really.

Mo_Laguardia

First of all, when I checked the picture, I didn't like the U-turn that much, but the overall feeling of the track is smooth and fast! Nice to drive with AntiSlider, needs precision a lot. Scenery is good. Generally a fine track.

Sw_Puskala

Don't know.. weird. Too narrow in parts. Doesn't look like an ordinary 'racing' track.

my votes:
1. J_CeltaAmore
2. Jn_Starr
3. Mo_Laguardia

Little info about that turn. My original design did not have that there, it was just a straight. I was afraid that the track would be too boring, so i added that U-turn. :P

Some points that hit my eye.
Etmil wrote:Scenery design is well done and another bonus point would come from me if it had a good lightmap.
When reviewing a track different drivers think about different things. I emphasize the importance of the track profile and how it is driven with default cars.

Scenery brings some character to the track but for example pu_Kalahar is an exellent track even when it has just plain sand scenery. Too much concentrating to scenery can make the track itself confusing.

What comes to a lightmaps.. nice additional thing to consider but not really necessary. When used properly can be great but if not, makes the track a mess and hard to drive.

A good track is for my point of view a track which is great to drive and has nice scenery and other things in order. Great looking track is nothing if it isn't good to drive.

I will give my votes later.
