Forum is FUBAR

Post by u9 » Wed Aug 30, 2006 2:24 pm

when i press the icon to view all new posts in a thread all the posts in any other thread is marked as read as well and I just get a message "No new posts since your last visit" when pressing the "view new posts in thread" icon.

This is unbelievably irritating. I have even tried to shift-click on the "view new posts" icon to have them open in another window, but still only the first thread i click shows the new posts... the others just say "No new posts since your last visit"

Could you guys please fix this?

Very odd, always seems to work fine for me. I guess it may be a problem with one of your browser settings? I don't know, odd problem.

the strage thing is that it works on all other forums (those who use phpbb)... I have looked through my profile settings and there is nothing different from this profile and the one I have on other forums... Is anybody having these problems? or does anybody use the "show new posts since last login" icon?

This seems to work for me too. However, we are probably going to move to using the XIHA Life forum in the nearish future (see http://www.xihalife.com) as I don't like phpbb. The XL forum still needs a few more features, and I need to write a script to move all old messages and users over to the new database, so this is going to take a little while.

How probably? If people here say no for this, is it still going to happen? I'm asking because (no offense) but this seems about thousand times better forum than xiha. Of course this is only my opinion.

That forum (in Creator's link) is too hard to read. I agree with Dragonstar. It does not look like a forum, oh man.... :?

Well, that is a website, not a forum. There is a forum in there too, and I was basically referring to using the code behind the forum. phpBB is a constant headache, this forum has been hacked into numerous times by automated scripts which harvest phpBB-driven sites, etc.

I'm building xihalife these days and using the same codebase would have the advantage of me being able to actively improve it. If people feel it's better to leave this the way it has been with not much active role from JGG personel then of course I can leave the old TS site here. All our games will have support forum, discussion, downloads, etc. at the xihalife at some point, but leaving TS behind is not really a problem since it already has an active forum here. We just can't build on it - phpBB doesn't support subforums so we can't add any more games here.

Well, sure. Thousand times better, but fortunately just your opinion. And I'm sure there's a lot of people here who will agree with you.

There are some features there that you don't have here. Like, you can upload images. Not everyone has a web server where they can link to. You can have your own page there, create a network of your friends, etc. We're going to focus on building a community at xihalife. I don't want to leave TS out of it, but I can't force anyone to come in either. If the official TS site sees the light of the day then probably most of the discussion will move there anyway, so whatever happens to this forum is not that big of a deal...

Well, actually moving the forum to XIHA or to a TS centralised website is a bit different. In the second case the forum will share accounts with the website and will remain the same as it is now (same users, same template - if you want so-, same posts, same moderators/administrators, everything the same). In this way TS Community will have everything in 1 website, with 1 subscription required only for both forum and website (no subscription for who already has an account here). In the other hand we have to consider that the turbosliders.com will require (in the best case) a couple of months to be published, since I'm not using a standard CMS (everything has to be programmed).

Well, maybe I overreacted. I really hate changes, nothing beats status quo  If this forum moves to xiha, I'll follow. No doubt about that. The reason for my reaction was, that for me this forum is much easier to follow than xiha, for what I looked at it. Of course this could just be because of old habits sticking in too tight.

It is just that this is JGG's forum and ts is JGG's game. Xiha is something else that I don't associate with JGG nor the game. So it feels strange to have the forum at a place that seems to be about something else than the game.

Well my main idea behind the move is that it would give me a better chance to improve the functionality based on member's wishes. I didn't write phpBB and I quite honestly dislike it so I am not to keen to do changes over here. Not to mention the fact that TS needs multiple categories and that pretty much limits this forum to being TS-only.

The XIHA forum is programmed by me from scratch and even though I know it doesn't have all the features phpBB does, it has some additional ones... and it's not finished so new features will be added. It can of course be better, and I would appreciate detailed feedback rather than "1000x worse than phpBB". My intent is to develop "groups" to XIHA Life, which could host anything from activity groups to game sites. Each groups has a domain, similar way to user pages, so TS page would be turbosliders.xihalife.com. You wouldn't need to navigate to TS section, you would land directly to a TS page. Each group member with admin rights would be able to adjust colors, backgrounds, layout, forum topics, etc. Each page will have a BBS, photo albums, file sharing area, public and private sections, etc...

Now, it must be said, the groups section is not finished yet, so... take my plans with grain of salt. It's a good plan but it still needs a lot of work.

True, however, both are owned and operated by the same people. JGG is a dedicated game distributor, XL is a "lifestyle" community. Discussion forum has always been a weak point at JGG, which is why that side of things is gonna move over to XL. JGG will be kept the way it is - I don't want user pages or photo albums there. I want to keep it a games-only page, and I'm very picky with what games are accepted.

Not sure if that makes any sense to anyone, but there you go.... :)

One more thing... think of the potential TS page at XIHA Life as a fansite. Since dede is building an official TS site, and we're building a community portal capable of cool fansites, there's nothing much the old TS forum can offer. I can leave it here if people want, but if most of the people are going to move to the new official TS site, there won't be much activity here anyway. At least at XL it will have a chance to be part of a growing and active community and hopefully attract some more people.

I Repeat: I still think of dede's project as the new "official" site and any XL-hosted site will be a cool little fansite. I think there can never be too many sites promoting a game.

I ment that for me this forum is much easier to follow than xiha. Xiha seems a bit confusing to me. I don't have a clue about the technical side of these two forums, so I don't comment about that. I guess I'll wait and see what's coming...
