Server Statistics of the last Week

Post by Flexman » Mon Feb 21, 2005 5:57 pm

I made a server/player statistic of the last week. Posting it here in a new topic maybe it helps players to know when the good times are and maybe it makes people think about some solutions to get the servers as full as they were in version 0.86...

Available as Excel-File (also zipped), or HTML-File (also zipped), or Open Office File.

I made the statistics from the Information on the PHP-Server. Unfortunately I didn't know that Turbosliders 1.0 only updates them when a cup starts and all 10 minutes. So this statistic is not very useful for Demo servers as the cups do not even last 10 minutes if they are well visited. That explains why I do not have many values for demo servers and many zeros there. If there is no value in a field or a -1 one it means the server was currently started. If there is a 0 this could mean that the server also could be offline (that explains the many zeros for the non-dedicated servers), but most interesting is the amount of players for the dedicated servers as they are most used.

About the demo server:

Here we cannot see much because of the reason mentioned above, but you can see that the zeros for the Playtrix Demo Server are in the night - after midday and at the evening it seems to be full. :-)

But more intersting is it for the full servers:
  • Best visited is the Turbosliders 2 server with all standard cars and without random mode. The maximum was 11 players but unfortunately they didn't even remain an hour on the server. :-( In this server you have 4 hours per week where you can hope to find a cup with 10 players.
  • Ghost servers were empty nearly all of the time, the norr Ghost Server reaching a maximum of 6 players.
  • US Server is completely empty, reaching a maximum of 2 players!
  • Terra Sever is visited regularly but only reached the maximum of 9 players once a week, the rest of the time 5 players are already much.
For the playtrix server: I marked the evenings (17:00-24:00 GMT+1) with a box, because these times are better visited.

The player numbers were taken each half hour, so if someone saw more or less players in a server they didn't remain half an hour there.

I think although the php-server is only updated every 10 minutes the statistic is not worthless and we got the status of the full servers and regarding that there were two servers full with 16 players most of the evening in Version 0.86 it is very sad now that you only have 10 players as maximum if you are in Europe and have luck enough to meet them.

Any ideas?

Nice work Flexman!

Just a curiosity: The max players on terra server was achieved at TURBO SLIDERS BRASIL`s 3rd Official Cup.

We hope to increase the number of players who likes drive V-F1 (Pu-F3) or V-F5 (Pu-Gt), by promoting cups every week.

The times when the server gets 4 or 5 players playing is 22:00 (-3 GMT).

I just had (again) another discussion with Flexman about the topic, how less players are playing TS.

He likes to see my and maybe other opinion here, like the following one, to motivate the community, the developer and JGG to take more care about the promotion of Turbo Sliders. More or less, that might be his wish, like maybe many others...:

My and opinion and especially TS 0.86 players might agree with that, is:
In TS 0.86 until summer 2004, there were full servers and even there were only 2 servers, they were full most of the time with up to 16 players.

Today, when we go online in TS 1.00, there aren't (anymore (anymore sounds still optimistic)) so many visited servers.
I started TS 1.00 already 300 times maybe already and a lot sessions were already just to see, who is online and it ended, that there were so less players, that i quitted "playing" TS again for this daytime.
New players have maybe more luck, since they play with 5 until 10 players in DemoServers with EasySlider (that EasySlider is so "promoted" is another strange story for me...).

But many Fullversion players are just not playing with new players, since they are by far no concurrence in the normal case.

So, i can just repeat what i told to Flexman: "I can by lucky, when i go online, that i meet more than 3 players on a server, which isn't a demoserver with EasySlider as car..."

But i told him too, that i can imagine, the developer of TS won't do really something to promote Turbo Sliders, since he must concentrate on the development.

The promotion is a task for JollyGoodGames, but i don't expect so much, since Jani P., the Creator is relative busy and is no TS player at all, too.
So, the community can do work to promote TS, too, for helping TS and themselves. But, and i can really understand that, that cannot be expected too, actually.

The fear of Flexman and others might be now, if TS 1.x would keep in its status with these relative empty servers still for the next 1, 2, 3 or more months (?).

My comment to him was for example to upgrade the Demoversion in the future to the status, TS 0.86 had. This means, the Demoversion would be nearly like the current Fullversion, just with the difference, that it keeps at the version 1.00 and only the fullversion contains the updates to 1.xy and maybe some special offers of JGG, like the possibility to participate in coming official JGG TS Cups, where only fullmembers can take part or something, where recorded races will be sended in, to win something, which would be only possible for fullversion players...
Well, maybe you see, i have so far no really convincing ideas and i'm no expert at that. But maybe you can take this as argument:

At the moment, there are less players. But the number of players buying the fullversion is still increasing.

With the upgrade of the Demo to TS 1.00 in the future, then the number of people playing TS would raise like in TS 0.86, i can imagine or: i hope ;)
Finally, since the extra features to buy the fullversion won't be such a big step like it is at the moment, in relation less people would buy the fullversion. But in absolute, there would be more players buying it.

Example calculation:
Now:
Community / Month = 500 players (??)
New Fullversion Players / Week = 2.5 (0.5%)

With Demo = TS 1.00
Community / Month = 2000 players (?)
New Fullversion Players / Week = 5 (0.25%)

Simple calculation, based on the hope, it would be like the effect of TS 0.86...

Disadvantages:
More Tracks and Cars _published_ by new trackmakers or carmakers...
It's of course nice, when players are making new tracks and new cars.
But: when the tracks are more or less bad and the cars too AND they will be published...well, i am no friend of this.

Driving a car, like Shopping Kart is a funny thing, when joking with it at a track, which contains a supermarket ;)...but nothing for normal servers.
Jazzyclubs city and rallye cars are relative nice instead. Now with his new formula one car, which is actually relative good, i think, though only in zoom 0.8 really playable at his formula one tracks, so cars in the speed of the default cars might be still one of the best solutions since the track has no need to be too big like it must be, when it's made for a fast car...

Tracks: many bad tracks are published and still are. Bad in checklines and in different designquestions.
The Playtrix.net server has not much self initiative to care about the tracks, which are on their servers, since their servers are still the most visited one.

Back to the topic ;)...
another dsisadvantage is, that TS 0.86 would be no more place for DemoPlayers as game to create and test own tracks and cars.
Though, cars they can already test with the demo, as i remember correct...sorry, that i am not sure, at this case.

Well, another problem might be, that the sites linking to the demo version of TS should be informed and have to change the details about the demo etc., but that's not that big problem, if it is one, i think.

...There are some more problems, as i remember, but i forgot them already, since i made a 30 minutes pause before submitting this post

I agree with Mike in many points but especially found one word extremely interesting:

Community.

That single word has so much meaning that I wonder how come almost anybody doesn't see it? It's not about the "Slider", it's not about the "record server", it's not about the "cup win", it's not about the "fastest lap" and it's not about "cool graphics" or "physics".

What is it about? It's about community.

That's what keeps people playing TurboSliders! They want to compare themselves, develope, chat, do it better than their friends, make name for themselves, prepare team events and recruit new members, challenge the other teams, talking about who's the fastest.....that is community, but currently, there aren't almost any support for this to take off. The game has chat, but that's it and it ain't enough.

Registeration should offer these...intangible benefits!

And when you wonder why DEMO-server players aren't registering the game...here is the answer: they have developed their own "community" and that gives them everything they want.

That community has several players, such as the1337, scorp, Pappa, Matti, kimic, jesseni, julle, all possible potential players for registering! Perhaps some of them already have done so, but they keep playing on DEMO-server because of the community they have formed together their co-drivers.

Sounds resonable. Another point is: Why should they register if full servers are empty most of the time? So they don't see any advantage in registering.
Mike Nike wrote: (that EasySlider is so "promoted" is another strange story for me...).
I totaly agree. Regarding that the game started with Slider only, then had many Antislider drivers and now the Speeder is the fastest in many cases it is also strange for me that there are so many Easyslider only servers and that there the wallpaper image on the mainpage shows an Easyslider.

A very big mistake also was turning the most used Turbosliders 2 Server into an Easyslider server some weeks ago. This server was well used until that point (of course not as full as the 0.86 servers were), but this way some more players discontinued playing and didn't come back yet (since it was changed back some weeks later).

What really is a shame is that no one of the responsible guys didn't seem to notice this problem! Also the coordination of the servers mustn't be so bad that such things happen. Usually one should have noticed that there already were enough Easyslider servers which are empty all the time and that a server with standard cars, no random and no ghost goes best.

Good ideas, yes, but how do you think those things could be better supported? Somehow in the game or new more racing oriented forums? I am sure Jollygood can give web space for anyone who is willing to start organizing bigger events or any kind of community stuff.

How about adding some team support for registered users? I've seen a few team tags already.

- Team cups, either ffa or team vs team, where results and awards go on the team's homepage.
- Team chat and forum/message board.

I could think about two things right now, I bet there are some more.

i also ...

... think, that in the past month the amount of players decrease constantly! i "tried" to play yesterday (2 players in demo (fixed-easy!!!), nobody in full at 23:00)) and today (2 in fullserver, 8 in demo, 21:30h).

but it is of course no fun to play a online-multiplayer game against yourself :(...

Ande, I know that these are diffucult to implement and I'd like to say first that I really appreciate everything you've done for the game and TS will always be one of my all time favourite games no matter what.

I would love to see someday an game-inside-integrated community support. That would start from registered driver profiles (login/password) - this gives a clear and distinct "personality" to drivers. Next step is to connect this profile to comprehensive statistics of all time / day / week and so on. Then, make it possible for players to view each others profiles and statistics, list races against player X, view lap time development....+ dozens of potential things...from the profile you could see when your friend has raced the last time or is he currently on some server. Instant-messages? Game-inside discussion (enhanced chat). Team support, just like was mentioned before. I know this is very big view and quite far from the technical side of development, but honestly I think these features would be highly valued. In my perfect view of the game, there is NO need to web-sites such as TS Tournaments, TS Ranking or TS Community. To me, having these sites online means that the game itself needs something that it currently doesn't have. And people have desire to create that by themselves and so we have them as "outsiders".

Yesterday we had an official TURBO SLIDERS BRASIL CUP..and reached a record of 15 players !!

The Brazillian 1.0 community is very solid and is growing every day!
I'm doing a TS marketing campaing by myself , trying to convince players at demo and 0.86 to buy 1.0!

The weekly OFFICIAL CUPS we have also helps to make newcomers more confident to buy! play and train to achieve skills to get better results.

On www.mikenike.com you'll find every log for TSB cups, if you like driving V-F1 (PU-F3) OR V-F5 (PU-GT) join our forum, we have an international area for you!

Even if you don't speak portuguese i can give you the CUP date and times. Just ask!

Look at the mess on clockwise!

Well this is nothing new for me this was the usual amount of players each afternoon and evening in Turbosliders 0.86.

Unfortunately this is history now and the ping to Brasil will be to bad to play from Europe I guess. I once tried one of the Terra Servers and they were not playable from here.

The other thing is that I want to join some server when I'm at home at the evening and not the other way round like going home from somewhere when there is a race. This reminds me to Turbosliders 0.82 when there was no online server and you had to figure out cup times in IRC. So this is a step backwards in my opinion!

It is more useful for me and I guess many others to have full servers each evening but as this is not anymore I have to look for some different game now and wish Antti good luck for gaining back the lost players. His game is really great but something went the wrong direction now. And denying that there is a lack of players now won't make it better.

This sounds interesting!

I think any change in the demo mode would make the situation better now. If people can play on every track and server with the demo version but only can participate in that community support with the full version maybe this can make the servers full again and causing enough players to register. Difficult to guess, I know. :(

I also have the feeling that some don't want to admit that more players vanished than joined recently. Don't think that this will help the game... :-(

0.86 servers used to be filled with people until 1.00 was released. Sometimes it was even hard to fit in while the servers were so highly populated. There were almost all the time more than 10 servers running and hardly no empty server at all. That is something that 1.00 players haven't been able to exprience yet and I doubt they won't in near future. Can anyone remember those 16/16s anymore?

Backwards-drivers were no problem since Mike Nike created this superb ServerAdminTool that helped us to get rid of those lamers. So actually we already had this problem under control in 0.86 and there was no need for the Pro-Mode anymore. I don't mean that Pro-Mode is useless but with SAT it is not vital.

I still want to thank Mike Nike for making Lamer-free-driving possible also in 0.86.

But although they were there, there were still enough players in the servers. Also this problem was solved with the Server Tool by MikeNike which would also have been more effective if the server admin doesn't need 2 weeks for answering a mail...

Seems not. Either most of the old players left and the new ones don't know what fun it was with many players or those who remained don't want to admit that there are so few players now.

For me a cup starts to get real fun if there are 12 or more players which is not going to happen anymore. Last time when there were 12+ players it lasted 15 minutes and suddenly there were only 6-8, the next cup the server was empty again.
